Crispy Fried Cheese Curds

My husband grew up in Minnesota.

Same house, same city his entire life.

Then when he was 19 took off for Quebec, Canada to live, explore and learn for 2 years.

When I met him a short time later I learned there are a few foods that he has a serious passion for.

Cheese curds {also known as squeaky cheese} is one of them.

He was passionate about them.

So much so that on our Honeymoon in the Great Northwest, we took a side trip to Tillamook Cheese Factory just so he could get some fresh curds.

Crispy Fried Cheese Curds

It was on that trip, that I tasted them myself for the first time.

Salty, chewy, squeaky, nuggets of cheese that taste oh so good!

We are now lucky enough that my parents live a mere 45 minutes from a cheese factory and every time we visit them, we ALWAYS make a stop to indulge in one of our favorite FRESH and squeaky snacks.

It was on our last trip to see them, that my niece and I decided to whip up a few different versions of fried cheese curds.

Last year I whipped up Beer Battered Cheese Curds.

But this year I wanted to try out some non-alcoholic versions.

Crispy Fried Cheese Curds

These curds were easy to make, crunchy and the hint of cayenne was my favorite part.

It was VERY mild – so much so I let my 18 month old eat them too.

But really added to the flavor experience.

If you've never had fried cheese curds, I HIGHLY recommend indulging at the first opportunity.

Fried, crunchy balls of cheese that melt and are salty and wow….really really good.

For all my non-alcoholic readers, this recipe is for you!

Prep Time 10 minutes

Cook Time 5 minutes

Total Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 quart vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cup buttermilk, divided
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 pound of cheese curds (or more, or less - really as much as you are willing to eat)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup Panko bread crumbs

Instructions

Heat oil on stove over medium to medium high heat while preparing the curds.

In a small bowl add 1/2 cup of buttermilk. Set aside.

In a third bowl combine flour, baking powder, salt and cayenne pepper, mix well.

Take curds and dip into buttermilk. Then dip into flour mixture and set aside. Do this to all of the curds.

Add 1 cup of buttermilk, water and egg to the flour mixture and mix well.

In another bowl add bread crumbs and set aside.

Dip floured curds into liquid buttermilk batter and remove with a slotted spoon. Place curds into bread crumbs and cover.

Once oil is ready {test oil with the end of a wooden spoon, if bubbles form around soon, then it's hot and ready} place battered curds into hot oil and cook 2 minutes, then flip and cook another 2 minutes until golden color.

Remove and place on a plate with paper towels.

As soon as they are cool enough to eat ~ DEVOUR!
